Last week, there were two reported incidents of shootings at schools resulting in injuries. One of these incidents took place at Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tennessee, where a fight escalated outside the stadium after a football game. A 16-year-old teenager was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. Two individuals were shot, one in the back and the other in the foot, but they have both been discharged from the hospital.

In another incident at Denali Montessori Elementary School in Anchorage, Alaska, a 26-year-old man was arrested following a shooting in the school’s parking lot. This incident occurred after the suspect dropped off a student at the school, and it was classified as a "domestic dispute." The school itself was not targeted. The suspect is facing charges of assault and misconduct involving a weapon.

Looking at the broader picture, national statistics show that nearly 1,300 children under the age of 17 die from gunshot wounds each year, and approximately 5,790 children receive treatment for firearm-related injuries, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While unintentional firearm deaths and homicides of children have been decreasing, there has been a disturbing increase in suicides.

Between 2012 and 2014, 53 percent of child gun deaths were classified as homicides, 38 percent were suicides, and 6 percent were accidental. It is important to note that less than 3 percent of youth homicides and less than 1 percent of youth suicides actually occur within school settings, according to a recent report from the National Center for Education Statistics.
