Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered And Questioning (LGBTQ) Individuals

What does the LGBTQ signify?

Different groups in the gay culture are represented by the terms lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ). The initial efforts for gay people were focused mainly upon men. To draw attention to specific issues affecting gay women, “lesbians” is often the first item.

Traditional research projects and health initiatives have excluded or been underrepresented by transgender or bisexual people. These two groups are now included in research studies and health initiatives.

What is the definition of sexual orientation?

Researchers Vickie Mays and Susan Cochran have found that sexual orientation can be described as the following:
– sexual attraction
– Sexual behavior
– sexual fantasies
Lifestyle, emotional, and social preferences
– self-identification.

Definition of terms

Traditionally, “gay” was used to describe a group of people who are attracted and in a relationship or with people of the same sex. Recognize, however, the existence of different groups in the gay community, and the fact that “gay”, while it may be used to describe them, is not inclusive. Transsexuals, as well as some bisexuals, don’t consider their selves gay. Research also shows that men who have had relationships other than with their partner are not necessarily gay. Our lesbians, gays, and bisexual community is full of diversity, which helps to explain the many different meanings of the word “gay.”

Straight or heterosexual refers to those who feel sexually and romantically attracted to the opposite gender.

Homosexuals, or gay, are people who feel sexually and romantically attracted to the same gender.

Lesbians are people who identify as homosexual.

Bisexual refers specifically to someone who is open to romantic and sexual relationships with both genders.

Transgender refers to a broad umbrella term that covers many gender expressions including drag queens, kings, bisexuals, crossdressers as well as transgenderists.

Transvestites dress up like people in the opposite sexuality.

Transsexuals feel that their anatomy is not consistent with the gender of their identity.

Bigender is a term that refers to individuals who can identify as having both gender-specific behavioral, cultural, and psychological characteristics.

Transgender is defined as someone who is transgender or has a lifestyle that violates gender norms.
